Wensleydale Creamery expands deli contract range with Sainsbury’s

The Wensleydale Creamery, producers of the famous Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese, has secured an expanded contract with Sainsbury’s to offer the stores’ regional deli-counters a wider selection of speciality cheeses made in Yorkshire.

The Creamery, based at Hawes in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, will supply Yorkshire Sainsbury’s stores with four of its handcrafted cheeses to complement its existing Yorkshire Wensleydale range.

The new Yorkshire cheeses include:

  • Traditional Double Gloucester – Awarded Gold at the British Cheese Awards 2014; a rich buttery coloured & flavoured cheese with a smooth but firm texture

  • Oak Smoked Yorkshire Wensleydale – Awarded Silver at the British Cheese Awards 2014; a creamy, crumbly cheese with a subtle smoked flavour

  • Traditional Red Leicester – Winner of the Champion Traditional Farmhouse Cheese trophy at the International Cheese Awards 2014; a handcrafted, distinctive russet red coloured cheese with a firm texture, carefully matured for the cheese to develop a mellow nutty flavour

  • Fountains Gold – A golden coloured cheddar cheese with a rich buttery, full flavour, made from local cow’s milk enriched with channel island milk to produce the unique flavour

David Hartley, Managing Director of the Wensleydale Creamery, said: “It’s fantastic to see more of our handcrafted cheeses now available at Sainsbury’s deli counters. We have a skilled team of master cheese-makers who carefully handcraft our cheese to time-honoured recipes, using milk from local farms to create great tasting cheese for customers to enjoy.”

Win Merrells, Sainsbury’s cheese developer, added: “In recent years we have worked hard to expand our selection of speciality cheeses and formed fantastic relationships with local dairies to offer customers cheeses from their local area.  Our deli counters will now offer a breadth of choice we have never had before and we think our customers will love trying the new cheeses we have on offer from the Wensleydale Creamery.”
